In collaboration with the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI), the CAT team organized and brought together professional engineers, cat modelers, insurance industry leaders, government organizations and academic experts for a Special Project Workshop titled, "Enhancing the Role of Structural Engineers in Catastrophe Modeling."
The full day workshop, hosted at the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Headquarters in Reston, VA, focused on hazard, vulnerability, loss, and resilience models. The packed room shared and expanded their knowledge of these modules through panels focusing on, "Catastrophe modeling and resilience assessment in the professional practice,” and "Continuous education and professional resources," before diving into small breakout subgroups.
The invaluable information and data gathered during this workshop will be used by the Special Project Committee to create a comprehensive list of recommendations, which will be included and published by ASCE in the Committee’s official technical report.
A huge thank you to ASCE and the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) for hosting us, to the ASCE Technical Committee on Reliability and Performance Indicators for coordinating this Special Project, and to all the attendees who contributed. We look forward to the next steps and the release of this publication in the coming months.
