We are thrilled to celebrate another achievement within the Center for Catastrophe Modeling and Resilience (CAT) family. Please join us in congratulating Husamettin Taysi, Ph.D., on successfully defending his dissertation!

His research directly addresses complex challenges in cat modeling by improving the speed, scale, and human element of flood risk analysis. Husamettin was advised by Associate CAT Director, Dr. Ethan Yang.

Dissertation Title: “Enhancing Catastrophe Flood Models with Urban Drainage Network Integrations and Adaptive Households Decision Making Framework for Advanced Flood Risk Analysis”

By combining machine learning emulation, hydrodynamic modeling, and agent-based simulation, his work enhances catastrophe flood models to run faster, accurately represent urban drainage infrastructure, and capture how households adapt to real-world flood experiences. Ultimately, this framework helps urban planners, insurers, and households anticipate how flood impacts evolve across spatial scales under extreme weather conditions.

Next he will be heading to New York University as a Postdoctoral Associate, where he will use inundation models to assess how storms overtop New York State's culverts and disrupt roadway networks. His long-term goal is to continue bridging the physical and human dimensions of flood risk and eventually lead his own academic research group as a faculty member.
